Have you ever felt the jarring realization that time has slipped away while you were too busy to notice? Chaplain Terry Warner opens this episode with a startling confession: "I took a deep breath this morning and when I exhaled it was September 2025." This powerful metaphor sets the stage for an intimate exploration of spiritual disconnection in our hurried world.
The chaplain vulnerably shares how his own spiritual life deteriorated into a series of pre-planned, hurried prayers scattered throughout busy days. Despite his ministry role, he found himself "running around in a panic and out of breath trying to please God" while paradoxically growing distant from the very relationship meant to sustain him. The moment of clarity came when he realized the absurdity of this approach, prompting him to "slam on the brakes" on his frantic lifestyle.
Perhaps the most profound insight comes from his observation about Jesus: "Jesus never ran to raise anybody from the dead." This countercultural perspective challenges our modern obsession with busyness and efficiency. The chaplain invites listeners to join him on a journey back to spiritual centeredness through unhurried presence with God. He offers specific scripture recommendations including Psalms 1, 23, and 103, alongside personal encouragement to move beyond merely "doing godly things" to experiencing authentic communion with God. Whether you're feeling spiritually exhausted or simply seeking a deeper connection, this episode offers both comfort and a gentle challenge to reclaim sacred stillness in your spiritual journey. 1:09 Hello friend, chaplain Terry Warner, here, are you too busy? This is Psalm 46, verse 10. But you know, I took a deep breath this morning and when I exhaled it was September, the 19th, 2025. I have been so busy in the last part of 2024 and now 2025 that before I realized what had happened, I discovered all at once I had fallen behind, falling behind so much that to catch up requires quite a bit of effort. My busyness had been so intent that, before I realized it, my alone time with Jesus had become a quick, planned prayer for breakfast, short help prayers during the morning and a pre-planned prayer for lunch.
2:01 Prayers must be pre-planned so I don't leave someone out that needs prayer. The fact that I do it hurriedly or not think about it maybe shows another fault I need to correct. Then Moore helped me Lord prayers during the afternoon and followed up with the pre-planned supper prayers. Life has gotten so busy and so political with all that is going on in this world that I find myself struggling to shuffle the day's responsibilities and I wind up feeling exhausted and frustrated. Luke 10, 38.
2:42 So this morning, while doing my morning reading, I decided to slam on the brakes of my hurried and frustrating lifestyle and take a deep breath and use the month of September as the turning point to obtain a closer walk with Jesus. So my challenge to you is to come along with me on this journey and be quiet and draw closer to God. You know Jesus never ran to raise anybody from the dead. He never hurried over to get over to see Lazarus before he died. It wouldn't have been easier, if we think about it, to bring Lazarus back from being sick than to bring him back from being dead.
3:24 I digress. He knows what I need. I tell him several times a day, but do I know what he needs? Does God have needs? Well, not like me, or maybe like me, but he does have a desire for his children to relax and just dwell in his praise, glory and worship. 1 Peter 5, 7. God loved me so much that he sent his son, jesus to die on my behalf. He gave me everything I need to succeed and live in victory, and I run around in a panic and out of breath trying to please him. What a screwed up mess and lifestyle I have created.
4:07 So today, like I said, I slammed on the brakes, repented and am finding the time to just sit quietly before him for as long as it takes to get back close to him as I once was. Revelation 2, 1 through 7. I will continue to read and study his word, continue to stay and say my pre-planned prayers, but then I will also take the time and just relax in his presence and listen to what I have not been able to hear because I have been too busy doing godly things. Suggested readings Psalm 103.
